Adding Self Care to your Fitness Routine

Gaining muscles and burning calories may be the first things on your mind when you develop a fitness routine, but they shouldn’t. Taking care of yourself should be first and foremost a priority. Balancing your workouts with a little TLC will help you reach your goals faster and without injuries. Here are some ways that you can add self-care into your fitness routine to improve your quality of life and reduce your overall stress.
Unwind with Hobbies
Committing to working out is hard work. And in order to balance out your exercises, you need a little relaxation in your life. What better way to do this than with a hobby you’ve always wanted to try? Try taking up knitting or adult coloring books. These are both great ways to reduce anxiety and control your stress. Finding an activity that you enjoy and pursuing it in your downtime is the key to a balanced lifestyle. Hobbies help us stay in the moment and allow us to access our inner peace, even when life seems a little hectic.
Get a Good Night’s Sleep
Getting quality sleep is paramount to a healthy lifestyle. When you only get a few hours of shut-eye, it can severely decrease your quality of life. It’s recommended to get at least seven or eight hours of sleep a night, if possible. Not only can sleep reduce your stress levels, but it can also improve your mood and memory. This is important when you’re trying to commit to your workouts. If you’re struggling to sleep soundly at night, put down your phone at least an hour before you go to bed. You can also try replacing your pillows, drinking chamomile tea, buying a noise machine, or investing in some blackout curtains to keep out any light.
Try Meditating
Have you ever wondered how athletes stay “in the zone” when they’re exercising? Meditation is the key. Meditation is a form of self-care that allows you to clear your thoughts while you focus on your workout goals. It can provide a wide variety of benefits, including reducing temptations to overeat, relieving stress, and allowing you to focus on your fitness routine. When you hit the gym, it can be hard to get your mind to transition from work worries or previous conversations with family members to burning calories and sweating. Meditation can help you accomplish this. It focuses on your breathing and allows you to stay present in the moment. Try meditating in the morning right after you wake up and at night before you go to bed, in an area in your home that can function as your own personal meditation space.
Stay Organized
Having trouble sticking to your fitness routine? Try staying organized by creating some playlists ahead of time on your phone before you go to the gym. Or, write down the workouts you want to accomplish when you begin your routine. Buying a journal and keeping track of your workouts will help keep you accountable for your exercises. If you’re working out at home instead of a public gym, make sure you designate an area where you can exercise free of clutter. This will allow you to focus on the task at hand instead of the cleaning up you have to do later on.
Wake Up with the Sun
Do you ever feel like there isn’t enough time in the day? Try waking up with the sun. When you force yourself to become a morning person, you’ll start to realize how productive you can be. Start off small by waking up an hour before you normally would. Use this extra time to eat breakfast, read the newspaper or exercise. If you normally lead a hectic life, this extra time will allow you to relax and enjoy life without noise for a little bit.
Self-care and fitness go hand in hand. So if you’re neglecting that aspect of your exercise regimen, consider taking some small steps to incorporate a little self-love into the mix.
