Ways to MakeYoga More Fun for Your Kids

When you mention yoga to your children, the first thing they might think is that it’s ‘boring’, right? However, if taught properly, yoga can actually be really fun for them to enjoy. Below are some of our team’s favorite ways to turn yoga into an upbeat and playful activity that they will love.

1. Themes

Theming each class or yoga sequence it’s really important in order to keep the kids engaged. You can choose travel themes, cartoon or movie themes, pop star themes, or any other kid-friendly theme that will keep them excited to join in.

2. Animation

Bring the poses to life! One of the best ways to keep your kids engaged in yoga poses is to animate them. Give each posture some kind of sound effect or physical movement to help them stay interested. For example, if teaching puppy pose, be sure to add some barks in and if teaching tree pose, be sure to add some wind to blow the tree branches. Although this may seem like a silly thing to do, it makes ALL the difference in kids yoga.

3. Storytelling

Creating a story is a must-have in kids yoga. Instead of teaching one pose at a time that maybe doesn’t really connect well, use your imagination to create a story that connects each pose together and takes the children through an adventure. You can also have them create the story along with you to teach them extra leadership skills, as well as to help them exercise their creativity throughout the class.

4. Props

Think of props like toys for yoga! These really help to keep the kids actively engaged in the yoga class. You can use many different yoga props to utilize in your storytelling. For example, you can create an Iceland themed yoga class where the children are traveling to the country of Iceland. You can create Icelandic themed animal poses and utilize yoga blocks to create Icelandic castles. This not only is super fun for the kids to participate in, but it can also educate them.

5. Games

There are many different school games that can be turned into yoga games, by using a little bit of creativity. Some popular ones that work well in the yoga studio are ‘Red Light, Green Light,’ or ‘Simon Says’ but replacing the words with yoga poses instead.

Try these out and let us know what your kids think! Or, join us in our Brooklyn based yoga center in Carroll Gardens and try a class out with us. Llamaste!
